Architecture is a unique discipline that provides the opportunity to solve real world problems , but also allows for personal artistic expression in the conceptualisation , execution , and representation of space . “ To me , architecture is the process of making , which is why the process of drawing , sketching , and model building are fundamental in the making of architecture ,” says Wian .
The contribution architecture can make to the improvement and welfare of communities is often underappreciated by the general public . However , architectural projects that attempt to superimpose a solution onto a condition without weaving it into the existing social and physical fabric of that particular context run the risk of exacerbating the problem .
In the project , Montana Travertine facebrick and Nutmeg and Piazza pavers were used throughout the building in order for the internal arcades and courtyards to be perceived as external and public spaces . The perception of a space as ‘ public ’ would aid in the facilitation of temporary acts of refuge and appropriation .
The use of bricks also played a significant role in how the building responds to the existing urban context of Pretoria . The Montana Travertine facebrick was specifically used to complement the existing building ’ s blue-and-grey bricks . Bricks can be an expression of time , place and the process of making . Aspects often neglected in contemporary architecture .
