The Voice of the Architect is an innovative concept whose goal is to shine a spotlight on award winning South African Architecture and give the hungry people of South Africa the chance to share in their enthusiasm for South African design . In its first year , the pioneering festival launches with six short films to feast one ’ s eye upon and have a glass of vino . The purpose of this event is to celebrate and to create a platform for community building within the architectural circles , to created public awareness towards those engaging with architects , as well as allow for practice exposure to the firms who have been producing these noteworthy works . Six short films will be a series of 25 minute long documentaries showcasing buildings in Johannesburg which won awards in 2021 . All awards have been given by The Gauteng Institute for Architecture . The films will run over Friday and Saturday nights with bookings for registered professionals made through CPD Central ( for CPD Credits ) and bookings for the public open through Itickets from 1st August . Three films will be shown each evening . There will be a cash bar and books and art will be available for purchase .
SHEVILATOR : ITS TIME FOR A BETTER VENTILATOR
Ridge ventilator designs can be traced back over 100 years . Essentially large steel boxes , they have no moving parts and fit to the roof ridge , spanning the uppermost purlin gap . Their width is double this and the height is the same and a gutter traps rain diverting it onto the roof . Airflow performance is poor and wind drives air and dust into the building through open sides .
The SHEVILATOR solves all of these problems . The SHEVILATOR is only 170mm above the roof sheet . Like an aerofoil ; as the wind blows , a lower pressure is created above it , assisting its excellent performance . Rain is trapped in an advanced fluid exchange matrix , which , despite its extremely low profile , diverts water no matter how hard it rains , whilst preventing dust entry .
Achieving this ultralow-profile with double the
HOW SHEVILATOR WORKS aerodynamic performance and perfect rain trapping qualities took four years of R & D . The SHEVILATOR is made from 0.5mm thick roof sheeting material , exactly matching the roof sheet finish . SHEVILATORS were first installed in 2015 in the Strand , Western Cape , a place known for its high wind and heavy rain . They have never leaked . With 1,000 SHEVILATORS installed , there have never been any leaks , nor the rain gutters blocked .
SHEVILATORS can be flat packed , and typically cost one fifth of the cost to transport compared to ridge vents . With only five different parts a SHEVILATOR can be assembled in minutes . No screws , rivets , or clips . No drilling , except to the roof . The standard width is 2,100mm , length is selected to span purlin spacing . The height is always 170mm .
Suitable for smoke ventilation of buildings < 2,500m 2 where the ‘ deemed to satisfy ’ rule applies , SANS 0400 part T – Fire , and natural ventilation to comply with SANS 10400 part O – Ventilation . Ideal for applications where heat reduction is required and dust ingress must be avoided such as food processing buildings , farm buildings , warehouses and industrial buildings . www . shevs . co . za | richard @ shev . co . za
