FIRE SAFETY & SECURITY
RISING HEAT, NEW CHALLENGES
NEW APPROACHES TO BUILDING SAFETY IN EXTREME HEAT
Climate change is here, and at Envirograf we are receiving an increasing number of enquiries about buildings experiencing problems caused by rising temperatures and increased solar heat. During recent hot weather, roof tiles have reached temperatures of around 50 ° C on both their upper and lower surfaces. These temperatures can soften roofing felt and, in some cases, cause it to scorch. The Timber Association has also highlighted concerns that increasing heat could make roof structures more susceptible to fire.
To address this, we have developed TaktaRoof Breathable Membrane, which will never burn. As roof temperatures increase, the material acts as an insulating layer, helping to prevent the timber beneath from becoming excessively hot.
We have also received enquiries from farmers and owners of agricultural buildings with corrugated metal roofs over livestock or storage areas containing flammable materials. These roofs can radiate significant heat into the building below. To overcome this, we developed TaktaRoof Wrap, which can be adhered to either the outside or inside of the metal roofing using our specialist adhesive. Once applied, it reduces heat transfer through the metal, creating more comfortable conditions for animals while improving safety in buildings storing flammable materials.
For flat roofs, we have developed TaktaRoof Cover, available in grey or black. It can be installed over existing bitumen felt or applied directly to suitable roof surfaces, helping to prevent excessive heat build-up. The product will not burn and is designed to withstand prolonged exposure to high temperatures and harsh weather conditions.
Envirograf has long produced fire-resistant timber coatings, but demand from owners of agricultural and industrial timber buildings led to the development of TaktaKote, available in green or black. The coating helps prevent fungal growth, wood rot and woodboring insects while providing up to 90 minutes of fire protection for timber structures.
Meteorologists have also highlighted the importance of natural ventilation during periods of extreme heat. However, opening windows and doors can allow flies, bees, mosquitoes and other

insects into buildings, particularly affecting vulnerable occupants in hospitals and care homes, as well as infants and young children.
To address this, we developed TaktaVents, which can be installed within window transoms or larger casement window openings. They provide natural ventilation while incorporating fly mesh to prevent insects from entering the building. An adjustable ventilation system allows occupants to regulate airflow, while an intumescent grille expands in the event of a fire to seal the opening and help prevent air from feeding the fire.
We have separate technical literature available for each of these products. As extreme weather becomes increasingly common, we believe it is essential to continue developing solutions that help keep buildings safe, resilient and prepared for the future.
