DESIGNING THE NIGHT, NOT JUST LIGHTING IT
Outdoor lighting is no longer an afterthought. For architects, it is part of the wider design language, shaping how a building is approached and experienced after dark. Good exterior lighting needs to do more than brighten a route. It should guide movement, support safety, improve security, protect visual comfort and reduce energy use, while respecting the architecture.
A 2023 study in Science reported an average 9.6 % annual increase in sky brightness between 2011 and 2022( Kyba et al., Science, 2023). In 2026, the International Energy Agency estimated that annual residential lighting electricity use would be more than 500 TWh higher today if lighting technology had not improved over the past decade( IEA, LED Lighting, 2026). Responsible lighting is becoming a specification issue.

Rather than flooding an exterior with excessive brightness, architects can use controlled pools of light to reveal texture, define routes, frame entrances and create a considered night time identity.
