MASTIC ASPHALT SUCCESSFULLY TESTED TO NEW EUROPEAN FIRE STANDARD
With the fire rating of waterproofing systems under increasing scrutiny since the Grenfell fire disaster , it is becoming increasingly important for specifiers and building owners to consider the fire classification of waterproofing systems .
The Mastic Asphalt Council ( MAC ) has recently tested its Recreation Duty ( RD ) Grade Mastic Asphalt system incorporating glass fibre tissue underlay to the European fire classification standard EN 13501-1 . It successfully achieves a fire classification rating of Bfl-s1 , confirming the product is flame-retardant with very limited smoke development .
MAC Director Malcolm Grinstead said : “ At present it would seem few waterproofing systems have achieved the Bfl-s1 fire classification rating to the European Standard , and this confirms Mastic Asphalt is a great choice for specifiers who need to demonstrate excellent fire ratings for waterproofing products .”
For specifiers seeking an efficient , cost-effective and simple to install way to weatherproof the exposed parts of buildings , mastic asphalt is a proven , long-lasting surfacing material . Seamless , durable and with exceptional waterproofing characteristics , mastic asphalt can be installed with minimal disruption and downtime .
Recreation Duty Mastic Asphalt is ideal for use on roofs , access walkways , balconies , terraces , podiums , plant rooms and stairways . It is UK manufactured , carbon neutral and recyclable .

AN EDUCATION ON EXTERIOR LAMINATE
The new classroom extension to Hob Hill Primary School in Rugeley has been completed using MEG Exterior grade cladding in 781 Ash and 1831 Grey .
Designed by Seymour Harris Architecture and installed by Tetraclad , the extension encompasses new classrooms and staff room increasing capacity at this Ofsted highly-rated CofE and Methodist Primary school in the West Midlands . The clever use of Ash woodgrain effect laminate fabricated into planks offset against the darker grey boards which stand proud of the face contrast well together . MEG carries a BBA Agrément Certificate and F1 panels from 6mm and thicker are rated Class B-s1 , d0 .
This scheme is a perfect example of MEG in action where the need for high performance and durability is married up with low life-cycle costs and aesthetic design . Recent site surveys on several schools a decade after installation have highlighted the remarkable weatherability of MEG with the panels looking the same as when first installed .
The range comprises 58 colours and 29 woodgrains together with 5 concrete and metal effect finishes . MEG is also able to incorporate Abet ’ s digital printing technology . This means that almost any design , photograph or pattern can be reproduced in stunning detail to give architects and designers unparalleled freedom to create unusual and dramatic building facades .
MEG is a self-supporting high pressure laminate ( HPL ) for cladding the exterior of buildings , balconies and other applications . It features high resistance to temperature , climate shock , weathering , UV light and impact . Furthermore , its chemical resistant nature and closed structure do not allow paint in spray cans , various inks , emulsion paints , lipstick or pastel paints to penetrate into the decorative layer . This negates the need for any anti-graffiti treatment and makes the surface easy to clean .
