MATT ANTROBUS DESIGN

BESPOKE BIRCH PLY KITCHENS & FURNITURE

When Matt Antrobus made his first birch ply & Formica table , he never imagined that over a decade later the material would become the go-to choice for most of his customers , and that his flourishing bespoke furniture business would be using birch plywood for the majority of its work . But sitting in his workshop in Bristol , he says , “ We love birch ply , it ’ s beautiful , versatile & sustainable and ticks all the boxes our clients want when looking for a stand-out piece of handmade furniture .”
Twelve years later Matt regularly gets commissions for entire bespoke kitchens . “ We pride ourselves on the quality and beauty of our finished products ” says Matt . “ Everyone loves the visible ply edge , and we either laminate the face with Formica , or leave it ‘ naked ’ for staining or lacquering .” Matt continues , “ However , we also appreciate that some clients need to keep costs down whilst still wanting to achieve a bespoke look , so we also make ‘ hybrid ’ kitchens which combine our doors and drawer fronts with off-theshelf carcasses from suppliers such as Ikea and Howdens .”
The business now also gets commissions for wardrobes , desks , benches and book shelves and , always wanting to expand their range , they have recently developed a unique pegboard system which has compatibility with most off-the-shelf accessories .
Always wanting to keep ahead of the game , Matt is now also working with other materials including bamboo , oak faced ply , and Valchromat , which is available in a variety of colours . “ A couple of years ago we invested in a high end CNC machine ”, explains Matt , “ and this has enabled us to speed up production as well as streamlining & improving our processes , as it can easily import designs from supplied drawings .”
The company works closely with Architects , Interior Designers & Kitchen Installers to fulfil their customers dreams . Recent clients include Greenhouse PR , Hook Mason Architects , Partytecture , Burgess Architects and Oramaa Lawrence Architects . “ We also worked with Russell Norman to make the cafe-style table tops for Mishkins , in London ”, says Matt .
The business has now been established for over 12 years and it supplies bespoke furniture all over the UK and Europe . “ Everything is lovingly designed and hand crafted in our workshop in Bristol and within reason , we can make a beautiful piece of furniture in any colour , any size and any shape .”
