THE GARRYOWEN
Steeped in tradition , the Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout , one of Australia ’ s most prestigious equestrienne events , has just celebrated its 90th year . The award is named after three-time Royal Melbourne Show Champion saddle horse , Garryowen , whose owner , Violet Murrell , died in 1934 , trying to save the horse from a stable fire . As a mark of honour and respect to Violet , a fresh , white gardenia is worn by riders in the event
This year , 30 horses and riders were judged on conformation and soundness , manners and paces , saddlery , costume , riding ability and overall appearance . As long as prior eligibility criteria are met , female riders , 18 years and over , who have also entered a class at the Royal Melbourne Show , are eligible to enter . The rules can be found on the Royal Melbourne Show website . Angela explains that the Garryowen is all about precision and perfection , all according to the rules of high-level , historically accurate presentation and showing .
‘ For the Garryowen , it ’ s crucial to have everything fitting perfectly , from the rider ’ s attire and tack , to the grooming and presentation of the horse , all must be precise . With the bridle ,
