During her recovery, respected horseman Josh Van Groen stepped in to train and show Vera Samantha for a season, and the partnership achieved tremendous success. Yet for Vera’ s owner, simply being able to return to the ring beside her beloved mare became the greatest victory of all.
“ I’ m so blessed to be able to show Vera again now,” Angy says.
One of the defining moments in their career together came at Q25, where Vera Samantha delivered an unforgettable performance. The mare claimed Grand Champion Quarter Horse Mare / Filly, Grand Champion Amateur Owner Quarter Horse Mare / Filly, and Grand Champion American Registered Quarter Horse Mare / Filly, achievements that cemented her reputation as an elite halter horse.
Yet despite the accolades, ribbons and titles, the relationship between horse and owner has always meant far more than the results.
“ Vera and I have always had such a close bond,” Angy says.“ I’ ve always thought she was such a beautiful
animal, and all our wins and placings have just been the icing on the cake.” Angy remembers the Victorian State Show, when Vera Samantha was only a yearling, as the moment she first realised the mare might have the potential to achieve something extraordinary.
“ That’ s when I started to think I might just have a horse that could be very successful.”
Behind the scenes, the support network has been small but incredibly meaningful.
While none of her close friends or family are particularly“ horsey,” her husband has remained a constant source of encouragement and support throughout the journey.
“ He understands how important my horses are to me,” Angy says.“ He’ s always been generous with his financial support. I couldn’ t have done what I have without him.”
She also credits the wider Australian Quarter Horse community for their kindness and encouragement over the years.
“ Most show people are friendly and helpful when needed, and there are a few very special people in my corner.” Looking toward the future, the goals remain refreshingly simple. The pair hope to compete locally, at state level and hopefully at the nationals next season, but beyond that, everything will be taken one year at a time.
“ My true hope is that Vera Samantha stays happy, healthy and sound,” Angy says.“ She won’ t be broken in, and I’ ll always have her as my beloved pet.”
For someone who once simply admired a handsome Quarter Horse from afar, the journey has already surpassed every dream she could have imagined.
“ We’ ve been way more successful than I ever imagined,” Angy reflects.“ I’ ve had a lot of luck and lots of blessings.”
And for those just beginning their own halter showing journey, her advice is heartfelt and genuine.
“ Love your horse, have fun, ask questions, have a thick skin, don’ t be too hard on yourself and enjoy the journey.”
