‘ Hunter In Hand ’

You ’ ll find Hunter In Hand a challenging and enjoyable led English pattern class . If you love showing in other English disciplines , it may be an inviting class for you . It often attracts good numbers , and can play a part in deciding High Point Awards at the end of a show .
Regardless of any equine competition , one should set a high standard of professionalism from the time of entering the show arena , to the time of leaving , and the Hunter In Hand class is no exception . As always , a pleasing first impression speaks volumes on your manners and overall attention to presentation . A Judge will be looking for a confidently & correctly executed Hunter In Hand pattern . Required tack , attire and class procedure are clearly noted in the AQHA Rulebook , and must be adhered to .
Exhibitors will be scored : 70 % on Movement , 20 % on Conformation , 10 % on Temperament .
THE HUNTER IN HAND CLASS The Hunter In Hand class is designed to evaluate the suitability of your horse for the Hunter Under Saddle class . It ’ s an in-hand movement class , with a set pattern , for the performance horse , namely Hunter-type horses . You can show any horse in HIH , however , an ideal prospect would have similar attributes to that of a good Hunter Under Saddle horse . The HIH Pattern is shown in this article , and in the AQHA Rulebook .
Prepare your horse as you would a Halter class . You may band or plait the mane and forelock , and may also plait the tail . Check the AQHA Rulebook to ascertain what equipment you ’ ll need to show your HIH horse in , depending upon its age . Your HIH attire should be as per the rulebook .
Study the AQHA Rulebook on how you will be scored , and how a penalty or disqualification is applied . This in itself can help you achieve credits or avoid penalties , subsequently giving you the chance to improve your overall score . Refer to the AQHA Rulebook often while practicing at home , essential if you want to become a more effective and successful competitor .
BE AWARE OF THE PENALTIES
• Knocking or knocking over a marker or cone .
• Fall of horse or exhibitor .
• Touching the bit or the chain .
• Break of gait – An appropriate penalty will be assessed at the Judge ’ s discretion for a break of gait up to 2 strides , but does not constitute off-pattern or immediate disqualification .
BE AWARE OF THE DISQUALIFICATIONS

• Completing triangles in the incorrect order .
• Not displaying the correct gait .
• Not submitting to an inspection prior to completing the pattern .
Your HIH class will begin with you presenting your horse to the Judge for evaluation on conformation and presentation . You ’ ll show your horse in hand , at the Walk and Trot , with movement a Judge would expect from a good Hunter Under Saddle horse . Judging requirements place emphasis on the workout , the movement , manners and presentation of the horse .
As for the Hunter In Hand workout itself , you must show your horse as true to Hunter Under Saddle movement as possible . As a competitor , you should travel through the HIH triangle pattern , showing your horse at the required gaits of walk and trot , performing in a correct , balanced and obedient manner .
