FEATURE ~ VETERINARY SERVICES
The Carmyle services within the equine reproduction program include artificial insemination , embryo flushing and embryo transfer .
The breeding facilities and a basic laboratory are set up to handle stallion semen , and semen storage . Carmyle have the facilities to stand stallions , to collect and evaluate semen , collect and AI , cool ship Australia-wide , freeze and ship , or store . When it comes to stallion management at Carmyle ,’ Al says . ‘ The services include collection of fresh semen for shipping , insemination and freezing , and Epididymal semen freezing , which is when semen is flushed from the epididymis and frozen ’.
‘ In 2012 , a Quarter Horse stallion unfortunately had to be put down at another clinic . The clinic castrated and shipped the testicles to us , and we flushed and froze the semen . Because of that procedure , there are now 11 foals on the ground from that Epididymal frozen semen .’
The Carmyle team also focus on lameness issues , using X-ray and Endoscopic examination , equine sports medicine , lameness work and rehabilitation .
DECADES OF LEARNING
Alan Simson graduated from Sydney University in 1976 , with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science ( BVSc ) & 1982 MACVSc ( Equine Medicine ), and never stopped wanting to learn .
‘ In 1977 , I started as a Veterinary Assistant at Mildura Vet Hospital , Victoria , full of knowledge and enthusiastic , but lacking professional and people skills . In 1978 , to specialise in horses , I moved to Scone as Veterinary Assistant and made Partner , with Morgan , Howey & Fraser , now Scone Equine Hospital . I achieved growth in my skills , competence , and expertise under the guidance of renowned vets , Bill Howey and John Morgan . I later worked two seasons in Newmarket Equine UK , became Head Assistant in my 2nd year there , then did one season at Hagyard .
