2026 NUTRIEN YOUNG GUNS CAMPDRAFT- AQHA OWNER INCENTIVE WINNER
However, the foundations had been quietly laid. Jessica had spent time working with Jamie over the years and shares a similar riding style a factor that proved invaluable.
Before the event, Jamie’ s advice was simple and telling:“ Trust him. Watch your cow. And no matter what happens, have fun.”
Duck N Down brings intensity, experience and an almost electric focus on cattle. Jessica brought composure, feel and the willingness to trust a horse who knows his job. Together, those qualities combined into a winning formula.
DEVELOPING A CHAMPION Producing a top level campdraft horse requires both instinct and planning but Jamie is quick to point out that some horses make the process easier than others.
“ Good horses like Duck N Down are easy to develop,” he says.“ He’ s a once-in-a-lifetime horse.”
That natural ability, supported by strong breeding, laid the groundwork. From there, it became a matter of guiding and refining rather than manufacturing talent. The one notable challenge in Duck N Down’ s progression? Learning to temper his intensity.
“ The only real challenge was trying to slow him down in the yard. He’ s so intense on a cow that slowing him down was important.”
That fire is part of what makes him exceptional, but channeling it correctly has been key to his longevity and consistency. Now, Jamie says,“ He’ s pretty set.”
A LIGHT TOUCH IN PREPARATION These days, Duck N Down’ s routine reflects his experience and maturity.
MORE THAN A BRIDESMAID For a horse of Duck N Down’ s calibre, the Young Guns victory was a crowning achievement but it sits within an already remarkable career.
“ For us, we feel like Duck N Down has achieved more than most,” Jamie says.“ He’ s probably the best bridesmaid in the country, coming second in many prestigious events.”
That consistency at the top level is a testament to both ability and heart. While another broad ribbon would be welcomed, Jamie’ s perspective is grounded.
“ For now, we just want to enjoy him. It would be fantastic to see another broad ribbon around his neck, and I have no doubt he has a couple more big runs in him.”
THE LEGACY CONTINUES As Duck N Down continues his competitive career, the next chapter is already taking shape in the paddock.
“ We have some exciting young progeny coming through the ranks,” Jamie says.“ We can’ t wait until they’ re old enough to step into Dad’ s shoes.”
If they inherit even a fraction of his intensity, instinct and heart, the future looks bright.
For Jamie, Jessica and everyone involved, Duck N Down is more than a winner. He is proof of the power of pedigree, patience and partnership and a reminder that truly great horses leave their mark not just through ribbons, but through the moments they create along the way.
“ He doesn’ t get ridden much anymore he knows his job well enough,” Jamie explains.
Instead, the focus is on maintaining fitness and freshness. Swimming and time on the walker keep him in peak physical condition, and he may only work a cow once before an event. It’ s a minimalist approach built on trust in a horse who understands exactly what’ s required when he enters the arena.
Collaboration between Jamie and Jessica centres on preserving that balance keeping him confident, fit and mentally sharp without overdoing it.
