OF BANGTAIL STUD

GILL Sawrey of Bangtail Stud , horse breeder , Non Pro competitor and all round advocate of quarter horses and the Australian cutting industry died March 17 2021 . She was 78 years old .

Gill was born at Ross in the central midlands of Tasmania in 1943 . She started out in pony club at a young age and grew up horse mad . In 1964 she married renowned Australian artist Hugh Sawrey and together they formed a partnership centred on horses , fine art , the creation of Bangtail stud . Later they instigated one of the longest running and successful show series for cutting and western competition in Australia ; the Kelly Country shows .

They were involved with the AQHA and NCHA from their earliest days and bought their first quarter horse ( a second cross mare by the name of Noir ) off David Brathingwaite of Roma . By 1972 they were living near Boonah QLD and had added a further four mares and several geldings to their stables . These included two daughters of King P234 first imported to Australia by Eddie Wilson called Magic Eye and Rues Mischief , Warlet ( imp ) by War Leo and Topper Sally by Topper Buck .
