diseases. Muscle growth should not be pushed forward
while the bones and joints are vulnerable. A lighter, leaner
weanling with appropriate height (remember height is an
indication of bone growth, not muscle) is the ideal. We all
know it doesn’t take long to increase body condition and
cover – only a couple of weeks – so resist the need to have
forward, fat foals and weanlings. Protecting the skeleton
is number one – there’s still plenty of time to increase
condition and cover in yearlings, when the skeleton is less
vulnerable.
Finally – don’t let foals have access to the mare’s feed or
creep feed until 2 or preferably 3 months of age (unless
on veterinary advice). More problems occur with over-
feeding than under-feeding and its more expensive!

Grain starch/sugar intake in late pregnant mares affects not
only her glucose and insulin levels – but those of the foetal
foal as well. High energy grain-starch/sugar diets in pregnant
