Yoorana Performance Horses have built up a quality broodmare band over the years , a mixture of various lines of QH , ASH and TB — with bloodlines of Braunstone Oak , Obviously Okie ( Q-20218 ), Playin To Style ( Q-39311 ), Hollywood Return ( Q-186 ), Peppy Doc Bar , Peppys Matlock and ASH sires , Silver Minstrel , Betterview Gunfire , Nabinabah Easy Sun , and Stanton Stud Featherson . The family have worked out what lines cross best with their stallions to produce the traits they desire , and with both stallions being dual registered , this has proven to be a great success for them .
To keep new blood coming through , Karen says that they also outcross to outside stallions , using mares sired by their own stallions , and when choosing a potential outside sire , she believes they ’ re spoilt for choices , considering the many talented sires on offer .
‘ During the big dry , we sold some lovely young progeny to great homes , and quite a few of them , geldings . We hope to see them competing soon . We haven ’ t bred a massive amount of foals ourselves , but we ’ ve bred some exceptionally nice ones . We have more broodmare power now , so will work on building those numbers over the next few seasons .’
With an aim to always produce quality , trainable and competitive horses , that can also do a day ’ s work , the Morgans won ’ t stand for horses with bad attitudes . With the Yoorana horses not only working in the Morgan ’ s beef cattle operation , they ’ re crucial for the busy Contracting work that Tom and Erin and their partners do .
‘ Temperament means everything and we pride ourselves on how quiet and accepting our horses are .’ Karen says . ‘ With Erin and myself mostly handling the stallions , especially in breeding season , we can ’ t accept less . With a high content of QH bloodlines , the QH x ASH cross is working really well , that kind temperament shines through . But they ’ re cowy , smart , athletic , trainable and coolminded , too . We want our horses to be versatile , and I think we can say what we ’ ve produced to date have been . We ’ re trying to breed horses that are talented and competitive in many disciplines , but also want to breed horses that are fun-those horses that you enjoy riding every day-the ones you leave until last to work because of the buzz they give you .’
The Morgans continue to enjoy competing in Challenges , Campdrafts and Snaffle Bit Cutting events , and are looking forward to watching Tom and his team of horses compete , which includes aiming for Warwick Gold Cup in October with none other than MB himself ! Erin too , has a big competition in Victoria in October , where she ’ ll partner with Ace in ‘ Australia ’ s Greatest Horsewoman Competition ’, the event , a first in the equine industry . Erin is also keen to get into Working Cowhorse more , as the Yoorana Performance Horses should be well suited to that event . YES - the Morgans are having a great time ! J
