Provide shelter if possible. 2. Another way to keep horses warm is to feed them hay. Heat is produced through the digestion of feed and can be useful in helping a horse maintain body temperature in cold winter weather. The phrase “bulking up for winter” is no joke!  3. Rugs are not always essential, but Blankets need to be breathable so a horse can dry if he starts to sweat, or waterproof if he’s exposed to elements. Check them regularly. 4. Horses fur insults them and is keeping all the warmth next to the skin so the hair may feel cold to the human touch, but they should have warm skin. 5. It is suggested that -6 degrees Celsius (20 degrees Fahrenheit) is the cut-off point for riding. Personally, I can’t imagine either being happy in this temperature. 6. Pay attention to footing. 7. Mud management. 8. Clean water. Please be safe and enjoy our Quarter Horses, as they are the ‘Kelato People’s Choice Award’ for Equitana 2018 Cheers Leonie Gorski 2019/2020 Amateur Division President May • June • 2019 • The Australian Quarter Horse Magazine • 9
