Brodie Howe originally went to 2021 Nutrien Sale looking to buy a roan Quarter horse gelding , but ended up purchasing Rey Denny , a chestnut , and a mare at that , from Sandy & Paul Webb .
When Rey Denny came into the sale ring , as a Masters horse , she started working very nicely , which immediately got Brodie ’ s attention .
‘ I ’ d heard her name before , as a cutter , and noticed that she was very smart and stylish in the way she worked ,’ Brodie recalls . ‘ So I liked her even more . She worked sensationally , never putting a foot wrong , and never once letting the cow beat her . She was a very cool horse to watch , and I liked her sire , who was well-known for his very chilled , easy-going progeny . I eventually parted with just over 28K to take home Rey Denny , my first purebred Quarter horse !’
Initially , as Denny had only ever done Cutting , Brodie decided that as she ’ d bought a Cutting horse , she was going to go Cutting , and even did one small event with her , which they won . But Brodie admits honestly , that she had really no idea about Cutting , having always been in the Stock horse side of things , with showing and Campdrafting . So she sent Denny down to Morgan Webb , at Cootamundra , in early January , 2022 . Brodie says that Morgan worked Denny on the bison he had , just to get her chasing them around a bit , adding that with the training and drafting side of things , she only worked with the bison , and only had about 3 weeks preparation with Morgan , prior to the Nutrien event . When Morgan commented on how easy Denny was to work with , Brodie quickly decided that he ’ d be the one to ride her in the 2022 Nutrien Masters Campdraft Event .
‘ Denny is my first Nutrien Sale purchase , and this year ’ s event was her first Nutrien event ,’ Brodie explains . ‘ It was also her first time out of the gate , her first time in the camp , and her first time around the pegs !! So , we were obviously very shocked , but so excited with the result ! I ’ m so proud of their success in this event ! Denny put in an amazing effort and in her first ever Campdraft , she went home from the 2022 Nutrien Classic Masters with a 1st in the first round , won the cut-out and got an equal 2nd in the finals ! Denny ’ s an awesome little horse , and she ’ s got me hooked on the breed . I don ’ t think I ’ ll buy anything else . I thank Morgan for the outstanding effort he put in with Denny .’
