PG.34 AQHA FEATURE... L et’s assume you’ve been training, preparing and showing your horse yourself. Because you are in total control of your showing from start to finish, begin to accept responsibility for the result and outcome of each class. Consistently become more aware during your show performances and, if you do happen to make a mistake, never beat up on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes and nobody’s perfect, but just by being more aware of errors can help you gain a mental advantage. Regardless of what you’ve won previously or how seasoned you are, you can still make mistakes. If you make them, own them — but make them valuable! Take them on board and learn from them, so that you don’t repeat them. Being more aware will help you plan for success in future classes, and be more capable of handling any situation at any stage of your showing. Remember that for many classes, there’s an opportunity after a class to review a judge’s scores. Use this as a means to help you improve, not to complain. Recognise and understand the reasons your errors were made, then learn to apply error control and handling. Become error aware and use this skill in the showring to help you cope with or prevent errors. By learning and applying the following, you’ll significantly maximise your success in your class performances. AUSTRALIAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION - WWW.AQHA.COM.AU
