The Australian Quarter Horse Association honours VAQUERO Q-1 with induction into the Hall of Fame .

Vaquero ( imp ) holds the honour of being allocated “ Q1 ” to his name in the Australian Quarter Horse Stud Book , Volume One 1968 , Purebred Registry .

Vaquero arrived in Australia in 1954 as part of a King Ranch consignment of four stallions and was sent to the King Ranch stud , “ Risdon ” at Warwick in Queensland . other high ranking performance horses . A total of 208 progeny have been recorded by him , with an even greater number of Australian Quarter Horses who can claim him as part of their pedigree . We honour him now as the first horse inducted into the newly established Hall of Fame .
At that time he was only a colt ( he was foaled in 1952 ), and the son of Hired Hand . Hired Hand has been described as the last and greatest son of Old Sorrel . Through Old Sorrel , Vaquero ’ s breeding goes back to Hickory Bill , Peter McCue , Cold Deck , Old Billy , Shilo – along the classic line to Sir Archy ( 1805-33 ), certainly one of the very founders of the breed .
In 1971 Vaquero was awarded the Australian Quarter Horse Association Award of Honour for his contribution to the breed . His progeny included the gelding , King Ranch Quarter Banjo ( awarded the Association ’ s first Register of Merit ), and many
