provide an opportunity for each horse and rider to really show their teamwork in getting the job done . I love Reining , the speed , the spins and the sliding stops .’
but the highlight of the experience was when I won Novice Youth Trail class , on HPS Dark Vader , and I came third on Triandibo Intoplay . I was so proud of both the horses and I have promised Ollie a buckle next year ! Attending the Nationals has given me a hunger for more and I can ’ t wait to go next year , so I ’ m really hoping that my show mums don ’ t disown me in the meantime .’
It ’ s wonderful to see the pride and gratitude this young man has in everything to do with the AQHA . Ryan not only has a great handle on sportsmanship , but also has a keen understanding that everything has a cost . Recognising this , Ryan and his brother manage their own small herd of around 100 selfshedding sheep , known as Dorpers . The boys eventually sell the lambs , to help pay for their horse ’ s upkeep , show gear and for any other hobbies they have .
In Tasmania , there are few opportunities to learn from better young riders , and with Bronwyn gone , there are basically no opportunities to access a suitably-qualified coach or regular professional for lessons . But Mum has taught me that having a good attitude is everything in life , so I try to embrace all opportunities that come my way .’
With a special love for the Quarter Horse breed , Ryan says they ’ ve taught him so much about himself . He says that while it ’ s not always that easy for people to gel with a new horse , he really enjoys the challenge and feels he can now quickly form a relationship with whichever horse he rides .
‘ I respect them , trust them and love them ,’ Ryan admits . ‘ My favourite classes are Trail , Ranch and Reining . I love the additional focus that you and your horse have to have for these classes . They
