training thoroughbred x quarter horses that Dad had bred for sprint racing early on in my teens . Dad established a roping club , and we would push up cattle , saddle and unsaddle horses . If we had time , we would set up a barrel course in the arena and practice after they had finished .”
Julie competed in her first Rodeo at 17 years of age , placing 2nd in the Ladies Open Barrel Race on a 4-year-old homebred horse her father gave her , ‘ Euchre ’ continued to place for her consistently . Twelve months on , Julie ’ s younger sister Barb would ride Euchre in the Junior Barrels , and Julie would compete in the Open Barrel race .
Barb went on to win 2 x Australian Jnr Barrel Racing and All Round Titles consecutively just competing in the Vic run ; Julie was so proud of them . Barb never competed again due to her parents ’ divorce . Julie started working , and with no time for horses or competing , her younger sister Diane took over the reins of ‘ Euchre .’ Diane also won 2 x Junior Australian Barrel Racing and All round titles on ‘ Euchre ’ another proud moment . Julie started competing again at about 22 years of age with ‘ Euchre ’ and his little brother , ‘ Curly ’.
