Ensuring they ’ re broke enough , and I ’ m in full control of them , before showing , is vital . I want that horse to have the best possible experience in its first show season .
I ’ ll put in extra work prior to showing , to make sure the horse is well-prepared mentally , before their first few shows . It gives them the best chance of success and creates the best outcome for their first few show experiences . I like to be certain a horse is most comfortable within itself . Even the mildest amount of pain can hold them back from peak performance , so I have a lameness vet examine my show horses regularly and prior to competition . Maintaining older horses for showing is definitely something I enjoy . While it ’ s important to ride them as broke horses , remember that horses never stop learning . I make them do exercises that force them to work a bit harder some days . It helps keep a horse ’ s mind interested in what you want .’
Taj says that anyone can learn new training techniques or tips – from watching someone work a horse in the work pen , or from a lesson or a clinic , with someone explaining what to do , or from watching a video . With so many talented US trainers , Taj is planning to head back to America this year , as it ’ s important to him to keep learning and improving .
