FEATURE: HORSE NUTRITION

Roughage First Nutrition

A Path to Optimal Equine Health
In the realm of equine nutrition, the phrase " overfed and undernourished " poignantly underscores a critical issue that many horse owners face today. Feeding a horse without considering the nutritional value can lead to cellular-level deficiencies that compromise overall health. One of the most overlooked aspects of equine nutrition is the role of inflammation. When inflammation persists in a horse ' s body, it can hinder the effectiveness of even the most carefully chosen feeds.
To combat this, it is essential to prioritize a roughage-based diet tailored to the horse ' s evolutionary needs. Horses have evolved over millennia as natural grazers, consuming a diet rich in grass and forage. By mimicking this natural diet, we can enhance their health and well-being significantly.
The Misconception of Complete Feeds
Commercially available complete feeds often give the impression that they can address all of a horse ' s nutritional needs, leading many to believe that such feeds are sufficient for every horse. However, the reality is that no horse is average; each animal has its unique needs, behaviours, and physiological responses. Relying solely on these complete feeds can inadvertently result in nutritional imbalances.
One major concern with these products is the potential for overfeeding vitamins and minerals. If a horse receives nutrients that it does not need, this excess can cause imbalances that affect its health negatively. For example, too much calcium might interfere with magnesium absorption, leading to various health issues.
