The Black Duck , known as Denzel , is a horse they bred and own , and so far , he ’ s turning out to be exactly what Dodge had hoped for .
The Black Duck Q-95402 , known as Denzel , is a horse they bred and own , and so far , he ’ s turning out to be exactly what Dodge had hoped for .
‘ Denzel was a stud until he was a 2½ year old ,’ Dodge begins . ‘ We bred him , we knew him and we wanted to let him grow and become strong , and get some maturity about him , so we waited before gelding him . After he was gelded , he became such a beautiful horse to be around and ride . He ’ s happy , good-minded and he ’ s been very easy going horse to work with and train . Choosing our trainer was easy . I don ’ t train anymore , but Trish and I had spoken about our need for a trainer for Denzel , and for us , it was Tyler Hodgman , from Glen Innes , NSW , that ticked every box . He ’ s from a family of great horsemen , has got some extra special talent and does a brilliant job . Tyler ’ s father , Rob Hodgman , and I , trained and showed together for a long time , and I was actually in the corner when Rob won his first Cutting Futurity .’
At the 2023 NCHA Futurity , Dodge says that while Denzel did his absolute best , the horse just wasn ’ t quite ready at the time . But he and Tyler scored a great 219 points , from a final of nine horses , picking up the Reserve Champion in the Gelding Incentive .
