82.3 Prohibited Equipment for showing
a) Protective boots, leg wraps and bandages are
prohibited in western pleasure, trail, halter, western
riding and showmanship;
b) Any curb-strap narrower than 12.5mm;
c) Martingales and draw reins, except for speed classes
and team penning;
d) Draw reins that are attached between or around the
front legs;
e) Nosebands and tie-downs, except for roping, speed
classes and team penning. However, these cannot
have any bare metal in contact with the horse’s head.
Chain, wire or metal tie-down or bonnets are prohibited,
regardless of how padded or wrapped;
f) Training tack collars;
g) Jerk lines for roping;
h) English spurs;
i) Twisted mouthpiece bits are not acceptable in Victoria,
Australia;
j) No whip of any type can be used in Western
performance classes with the exception of lunge line
and barrel race.
82.4. Western Attire
In halter, speed classes, team penning and other western
classes, it is mandatory to wear appropriate western attire,
including long sleeve shirt, collar (band, stand-up, tuxedo,
etc.) western hat, western pants/jeans and western boots.
The hat must be on the rider‟s head when the exhibitor
enters the arena. Spurs and chaps are optional in ridden
classes. Also refer to rules 51.25, 51.26 and 51.27.

The horse should be ridden at a speed which is a natural
