The parable of the Prodigal Son

“ For this my son was dead and is alive again ; he was lost and is found .” ( Luke : 15-24 ).
Parable is a simple story used to illustrate a spiritual lesson . Our Lord Jesus used several parables that were drawn from the people ’ s daily lives to teach them spiritual lessons . The story of the prodigal son was one of them . It was the story of a man who had two sons . The younger asked his father to give him his inheritance and the father consented . The son took it and left his father ’ s house to a distant country where he wasted his possessions with prodigal living and became poor as a result . A severe famine hit the place and the son fell into a great need . He had no choice but to accept a “ Feeding Swine ” job . He reached a level that he was not able to fill his stomach from their food and was about to perish with hunger . The son came to himself thinking about the luxury living he used to live at his father ’ s house and decided to return back home just as a hired servant . The compassionate father was waiting for his son ’ s return and accepted him as if the son were alive after being dead . That was part of the story .
The parable of the Prodigal Son forms a beautiful picture of repentance . We are all in need of repentance which implies action and making a decision and acting upon it . The Heavenly Father is patiently and lovingly waiting for our return and ready to receive us with His loving forgiveness . The Lord rejoices in our coming back and eagerly awaiting our return . Let ’ s take advantage of the sacrament of repentance and confession and have a new start that glorifies the name of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ to enjoy the eternal life in His everlasting kingdom .
