what’s on: fashion & beauty what’s on: fashion & beauty salon scandal: THE LATEST NEWS FROM EDINBURGH SALON, HAIR BY JFK We catch up with the team at the Edinburgh hair salon, Hair by JFK at 1 Bruntsfield Place, winner of the Best Scottish Salon Award at the Your Hair Awards last year, and ask them about the debate surrounding their controversial new photographic collection. The Melanic Angel Collection by Salon Directors Sandy Caird and Faruk Mohammed qualified for the British Hairdressing Awards late last year and has been published in magazines across the world including Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Mexico, Slovenia and India. One of the images even made the front cover of the renowned hair magazine, Friseur in Germany. However one local resident has taken to Twitter to complain that the images which are now being displayed on the salon windows, are “sexist advertising”. So what is it about this particular collection of directional photographs, showcasing the creativity and talent of two of Scotland’s finest hairdressers, that has ruffled the feathers of one resident? Karen Brown, the owner of the salon is surprised by the response but encourages the debate and discourse that the images have stimulated. “As hairdressers we express ourselves through our photographic collections. 40 informededinburgh.co.uk The Melanic Angel Collection does feature nudity but we would never use our models in an exploitative fashion. The aim was to highlight our belief that with fierce, standout haircuts and styling, what you wear is inconsequential. The models we cast were all strong, independent individuals and we felt this absolutely came across in each of the images. Our intention is always to help women look good and feel great and until now the images have received an amazing response.” The female photographer who worked with the Hair by JFK team on the campaign, Martyna Kamecka is also intrigued by the response, MORE > informededinburgh.co.uk informededinburgh.co.uk 41 35
