A Note From The Editor:
Since I follow dozens of animal-related Facebook pages, my news feed is always full of interesting and helpful info. I just came across an article about Spain becoming one of the first countries to require that municipalities include companion animals in official emergency protocols. The new regulations mandate that local disaster response and sheltering plans account for pets during evacuations. While the U. S. has similar pet-inclusive emergency planning, it’ s less uniform than Spain’ s new rule, because it depends on local implementation and federal funding incentives, not a single nationwide municipal mandate. In Pennsylvania, it ' s largely a matter of guidance and solely up to the owners to implement. As I write this, the weather has dropped about twenty degrees since yesterday, and after a rainy but beautiful, mild weekend, we are back in the throes of winter. Hopefully, by the time this magazine is published, it will start to feel and act like spring again! Weather has been so extreme over the past few years, which highlights the importance of having emergency measures in place, not just for ourselves, but for our pets, as well. April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month, and it ' s a great reminder to get some plans together during this unpredictable season, whether it ' s for something as benign as a blackout or extreme as flooding and evacuation. Having a plan in place- like knowing where our pets will shelter during severe weather and ensuring they have proper identification- can prevent a stressful situation from turning into an emergency. It ' s always good to be prepared so you can respond with confidence rather than panic. There ' s an entire page of helpful tips in this issue regarding pet first aid preparation- I hope you never have to use them!
