Breed All About It!

Spotlight on: The English Cocker Spaniel

Description: English Cocker Spaniels are medium sized sporting dogs with big, floppy ears, and soft wavy fur in a variety of colors, including black, black and white, blue roan( white and mixed colors), orange roan, red, gold, and sable. The main differences between an English Cocker and an American Cocker Spaniel are their size, coat, and head shape. English Cockers are taller with a more athletic build, and a longer coat. American Cockers have a more rounded head and smaller muzzle. Temperament: English Cocker Spaniels are known for their friendly, affectionate, and playful nature. They are loyal, devoted companions, and have a strong desire to please, which makes them easily trainable. They have a lot of energy but a calm demeanor, which makes them a perfect family pet. They are generally excellent with children and other dogs. They can get along with cats but do have a prey drive, so they must be introduced carefully, watched, and discouraged from chasing them. This breed is adaptable to a variety of living arrangements, but are especially suitable for active families. English Cocker Spaniel fans often use the word " merry " to describe their pet ' s personality. Average Height / Weight: 15- 17 inches tall / 26- 34 pounds. Health Issues: English Cockers can be prone to allergies, benign tumors, cataracts, ear infections, hearing loss, luxating patellas, progressive retinal atrophy, and hypothyroidism. Life Expectancy: 12- 14 years Exercise: English Cockers were bred as hunting dogs, so they can be quite energetic and require a good amount of exercise. An hour or so a day of lengthy walks, running, and playing outside should be sufficient. They do really well with obedience training. Grooming: This breed ' s silky coat is prone to matting, so a daily brushing is recommended. They can also shed quite a bit. Their long, floppy ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent tangles and / or infections.
