A Note From The Editor:

Our Facebook page- Pawsitively Pets Magazine- is all too often filled with lost dog posts, and less often, unfortunately, posts of ones that were found. About once a week, I go through all of them, and am always thrilled to see the ones that were reunited with their families. One of the recent stories with a happy ending involved a hiker that rescued a missing puppy in Pottsville. Collin Leiby was walking his own dog on a mountain trail in February when he happened to glance down a deep, abandoned coal pit and noticed something moving. Taking a closer look, he saw a dog near a pile of rocks, wagging his tail when he caught sight of Collin. He instantly recognized Freddy, a six month old Golden Retriever that had sparked a week long search in the community. The dog was extremely weak, but walked toward Collin when he heard him call his name. Several feet down in the pit, he was too weary to get out on his own, but Collin was able to reach down and help pull him up. Freddy ' s owners- Pam and Joe Palko- got a wonderful surprise when they received an alert from their home security camera and saw a stranger at their door with Freddy by his side. He was about ten pounds lighter and a bit frazzled, but amazingly okay, despite the lack of food and exposure to frigid temps throughout the week he was gone. His family took all the right steps when Freddy went missing- organizing volunteers to look for him, posting on social media, putting up flyers, and following up on tips. They even hired companies that use search dogs and drones to track missing pets. The Palkos are grateful to Collin and the entire community that worked to bring Freddy home. Not everyone is that lucky, even when they do everything right. Recent studies indicate that only 71 % of lost dogs are recovered and 53 % of lost cats. The majority of them are microchipped, and that definitely helps. But there ' s a lot of legwork involved in locating a lost pet, too. We are fortunate to have a number of volunteer organizations in Pennsylvania that help owners find their beloved family members when they go missing. Find Toby in PA is one of them, and they are currently looking for virtual volunteers to assist with their mission. All that ' s required is a minimum of two hours a week, internet access, and a Facebook page. What a rewarding opportunity! If you are interested in helping create more happy endings, please get in touch with Find Toby: findtobyinpa. org.
