Ask Greta

Dear Greta,
My grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year, and a few moths later, my grandfather died of a heart attack. While everyone was very sad and upset by the news, my grandmother went into shock and just hasn ' t been the same since. She doesn ' t take care of herself anymore, and basically, just doesn ' t care about anything. I ' m the only grandson living in the same area as my gram, as the rest of the family lives in different parts of the country. My mother asked her to go and stay with them, but she refused to leave the house that she shared with her husband all those years. I want to help her, and I try to visit often and get her out of the house, but she just sits at home and does nothing. How can I help her? I love her a lot and it ' s hard to sit idly by and watch her fall apart.
- Concerned grandson
Dear Grandson,
Depression is a big problem in the elderly population, especially when a spouse is widowed. However, there is help available. Do you have a family physican? If so, contact him or her to discuss the problem. Get suggestions about how your grandmother can manage her depression so she can once again live a rewarding life. You could also discuss the situation with a clergyperson, who may also have some advice or know of local support groups. It ' s vital that your grandmother knows she is not alone, although I ' m sure that ' s how she feels. If you know of a friend or neighbor who ' s been through what your grandmother ' s experiencing, perhaps they ' d be willing to speak with her. Hats off to you for being so devoted. Elderly people are too often callously disregarded, and it ' s refreshing to hear from someone like you.

Thought For The Day

" Be good to people. You will be remembered more for your kindness than any level of success you could possibly attain."- Mandy Hale
I know it ' s hard to believe but we once had a phone that was attached to the wall.
When it rang, we ' d pick it up without knowing who was calling.
It ' s amazing we ' re still alive.
