In Hindi, there is a term " Charmakar ", which generally means a person engaged in leather work. However, in India, people involved in this profession have been confined to a specific caste considered as Dalit. Furthermore, they were labeled as " Chamars ". This raises an important question: why and how did leather workers in India come to be classified as Dalits?

In ancient Indian history, there was neither a community named " Chamar " nor was the profession of leather work associated with Dalits. Then how, in modern India, did people get categorized as Chamars and placed among the Scheduled Castes?
