Regarding the education of Dalits, Dr. Ambedkar felt that spreading education was essential to end the tendency of accepting oppression and injustice as fate. Only through education could Dalits realize how progressive the world was and how backward they had been kept. He was deeply pained by the fact that despite being large in number, Dalits silently endured injustice and suppression. He once said,“ Even if you step on an ant, it resists and bites. But Dalits, despite their numbers, remain silent.” To end such a mindset, he emphasized both formal and informal education for the Dalit community.
Dr. Ambedkar also believed that political representation was vital for safeguarding the interests of Dalits. He recommended legal provisions to ensure their adequate participation in both central and provincial legislatures. He proposed that, for the first ten years, Dalits should elect their representatives through separate electorates, and afterward, the reserved seats for Dalits should be filled by the votes of all adult voters in the constituency.
