Editor’ s note: On the anniversary of Edith Green’ s passing, we are reprinting an abbreviated version of a biography of Green published by the University of Oregon.
Charbonneau named Edith Green Park to honor this remarkable Charbonneau resident and national leader. We take pride in her achievements in education, civil rights and equality for all Americans.
Edith Green was a congresswoman representing Oregon’ s Third Congressional District, and she was one of the most influential and successful women in post-World War II America.
After defeating future Oregon Gov. Tom McCall in the 1954 election for Congress, Congresswoman Green served for 18 years on the House Committee on Education and Labor and later on the budget-writing Ways and Means Committee. She was the second highest-ranking member of Congress and blazed a trail as one of the first women in Congress to chair a major committee and pass significant legislation with lasting impact on America.

Congresswoman Green was an educator, the daughter of educators and has been referred to as“ the mother of higher education” for her groundbreaking legislation. This legislation has shaped the higher education system that exists in America today, including Title IX of the 1972 Higher Education Act, which ensures equality in higher education, from university admissions to equal access for men and women in athletics.
Edith Green championed the“ Equal Pay Act of 1963,” which created pay equality for men and women who did the same work and is the basis of laws that protect gender-based equality in federal law.
She served as John F. Kennedy’ s 1960 Campaign Chair for Oregon and put his name into nomination at the 1956 and 1960 Democratic National Conventions. President Ronald Reagan appointed former Congresswoman Green two decades later to serve on the Presidential Commission on White House Fellows.

in how pickleball went from two outdoor courts at Edith Green Park, to pivoting to a year-round sports center located at the village. It turned out better for the park too, with a fenced off-leash dog area, bocce courts, gazebos and landscaping. Both results exceeded expectations.
Jim: I agree. For us, reaching out to the community is a best practice that’ s central to the success of what we do.
Q: What would you write in a note for your replacement, which for you
Anne, will be in May, when you termout as a director?
Anne: I would write that before you do anything, take the pulse of the community. Learn how things work. Do your due diligence, and doors of opportunity will present themselves. Above all, don’ t break it!
Jim: My note would say to take the time to absorb Charbonneau’ s culture. It will give you an understanding of the depth and breadth of the residents who make up the community. From this, you will be able to pick up Charbonneau’ s magic, the special ambiance, beauty and vitality that is what makes Charbonneau distinctly Charbonneau.
