As much as I would like to believe in the wisdom of a cartoon owl , Friend Owl ’ s expounding on the hallmarks of the season did not hit the mark this year with little winter to speak of and an early spring . The teachings of a solitary and nocturnal bird of prey aside , here is a to start the newsletter ! Baby birds learn to sing during spring . Although they are born with the ability to sing , they must learn the specific songs of their species . They often learn their songs within two months of being born .
With that important fact in tow let ’ s take a look at the ASCE NH calendar for April and into May . In April the University of NH played host to the ASCE Student Symposium ( Steel Bridge & Concrete Canoe ) which enjoyed a fantastic turnout both in the numerous competing schools as well as the fans there to support and cheer on our aspiring engineers . Much like the animals of the forest learning to walk and sing these students are taking their first steps as engineers in a competition aimed at preparing them for their future . Having been a volunteer for the bridge competition for 20 years , it is amazing to see the amount of effort and enthusiasm these students put into their bridges each year .
As we roll into May , please be on the lookout for the annul ballot for the NH‐ ASCE Board of Directors , and if you have interest in serving there is still time , so please reach out to us ! Please also save the date for the ASCE‐NH Annual meeting on May 30 th at the Derryfield . We expect to be honoring our Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement ( OCEA ) Award winner , handing out our ASCE NH Student Scholarships , and swearing in our future Board of Directors .
