Sports Center

Construction awaits city permits

CCC vision and leadership
Pickleball is already growing its membership roster through community outreach and free clinics to introduce the
MCLAIN sport to Charbonneau
Residents . Tennis is also hosting clinics for residents new to the sport , or perhaps returning to the sport after a long layoff . Total membership of the combined clubs is now over 300 , compared to only 180 tennis members a few years ago . The expected membership at the end of this year is likely to reach 400-500 members at the Sports Center , primarily residents .
The anticipated added noise of the outdoor courts was a significant issue for nearby residences , so the CCC Board decided to avoid or ameliorate the noise issue that has negatively affected other communities in Oregon as well as around the country , by constructing a new building where the two outdoor courts are today . This will significantly contain the noise indoors in a real building , not a bubble . After reading many news articles regarding controversies and court cases involving noise of outdoor sports , especially pickleball , the CCC Board decision is the best solution for Charbonneau — year-around indoor tennis and pickleball courts . This noise issue continues forward for most of the country ( see Wall Street
Journal article “ Pickleball is Pitting Neighbor Against Neighbor in Noise Conscious Communities ,” November 2022 .) The CCC Board hopes that the only neighbor versus neighbor in Charbonneau is a doubles match on the courts of the new Sports Center .
Sport Center management
RULES , RULES , RULES . The CCC Board and employee management team supporting the Sport Center will be focusing on adherence to the rules . Rules were recently updated by the two clubs ( tennis and pickleball ) and approved by management . While the rules of tennis and pickleball haven ’ t changed , the rules on using the courts and facilities MUST CHANGE due to the increased number of members . Each club member is being asked to commit to the facility ’ s new rules . Previously , a friendly word or email was the only consequence , and no one received a formal warning or other consequence , including the repeat offenders . This MUST CHANGE so that all members , especially residents , have access to court times and high-quality facilities . So , it is every member ’ s responsibility to remind other members when they observe a facilities rule being ignored . Since the facilities are owned and operated by an HOA , the members , especially resident members , have an extra incentive to hold others accountable . Consequences for repeat offenders can result in temporary , or even permanent loss of privileges . Some rules are intended to preserve and protect facilities and equipment : Wear proper shoes ( non-marking soles ), no pounding racquet into net or curtains , proper use of ball machine .
Other rules are intended to provide reasonable access to court reservation times : There are limits to how many times a member may play
each week ( prevents a person or group from reserving many blocks of court time ), guests must sign in and pay the small fees ( assures revenues cover operating costs ), family memberships should be restricted to immediate family ( e . g . grandparent , school age child , school age grandchildren ).
Rules also try to balance the amount of court time available between three groups : free play by members , lessons / clinics and team competitions .
In summary , the Sports Center supports play that is fun , competitive and social , allowing improvement for all levels . The rules of the games are not changing , but adherence to the rules for using the facilities MUST CHANGE to accommodate the higher number of members and two important sports for Charbonneau residents .
Construction timeline
The tennis and pickleball clubs continue to organize and prepare for a surge in membership that is anticipated with the construction and completion of an indoor facility shared by the two clubs for year-around play . However , the city of Wilsonville is not providing a firm date for permit approvals . If the approval comes in April , then the construction can likely be finished in mid-summer . Of course , once construction starts , the courts will not be available for either tennis or pickleball , a worthwhile inconvenience since completion will accommodate play regardless of the weather conditions outdoors throughout the year .
Tennis Club News by Kathi Gray
Professional tennis continues to be popular , including the tournament in Indian Wells , California ( BNP Paribas Open ). Many of our Charbonneau club members headed down to the Palm Springs / Indian Wells area in
March to watch the tournament and , hopefully , enjoy a little winter sunshine !
Back here in Charbonneau , our club invites residents and friends to enjoy great tennis competition right here at our tennis center ( soon to be a Sports Center ). A new season of USTA matches has begun ! We have great mixed doubles , and men ’ s and women ’ s teams . We compete with teams from all over the Portland area as we move through our season . We are focused on winning our division , which then moves us into the sectional tournament that includes several neighboring states . The win then puts us in the running for a spot in the national championship tournament . It is a great honor to represent Charbonneau in these USTA matches . Our club has been sectional champion many times and competes closely for the national spot . Here is a list of our home matches if you would like to see exceptional tennis in our upstairs viewing room . The front door is unlocked during the matches , and it is free for all to enjoy !
