PRESIDENT ’ S MESSAGE

It ’ s official , we can finally say spring has sprung ! The weather is nice , the daffodils are out , the trees have buds , and construction season has started . Here in Manchester this is our busiest time as we try to initiate everything we have been planning for the last 6 months and get it all off the ground at once . It is also our most exciting time of the year and one of the times I enjoy the most .
I would like to put in a special plug for our scholarship program this year which provides direct funds to help current and potential students who are or plan on studying in an ABET accredited civil engineering program . This is a great opportunity for additional funds for students that can cover tuition , room and board , books , or any other school related expense . Get the word out , there is still time !
Earlier this month many of us were lucky enough to attend the Lunch and Learn presented by the Rauseo ’ s about their project at Merchant ’ s Way in Concord NH . This project is providing 81,000SF of new real-estate that will house Market Basket , Home Goods , a New Hampshire Liquor and Wine Outlet , as well as other services .
Be on the look out for May ’ s Lunch and Learn that will be a presentation on the current design of a new stormwater separation project in Manchester NH presented by Mahmood Khwaja of CDMSmith . This project will involve the direct boring of a 16 ’ diameter , 2-mile-long tunnel beneath the southeast of downtown Manchester that will be connected to surface drainage by 22 ’ diameter drop shafts , some as deep as 70 ’! Please join us in discussing this new and innovative project that will represent one of the largest civil works projects in Manchester since the creation of the dam and canal systems for the Amoskeag mills back in the mid-1800s .
But for this weekend , get out there and enjoy this weather !
My best to you and yours , Owen Friend-Gray PE ASCE-NH President
