Our Irish eyes were smiling as we were able to hold a luncheon without wearing required masks ! Shamrocks and gold coins decorated the tables and our caterer , Jody of Western Pacific Catering , prepared a wonderful chicken-breast lunch complete with cheesecake . The speaker was Shirley Tormey , curator for Oregon Fire Service Museum . Shirley , dressed in period attire , narrated the dramatic story of one of Portland ’ s most devastating fires , the Portland riverfront fire of 1872 . Portland at that time was located between Burnside and Harrison St . and west from the river to 7th Ave . It ’ s hard to imagine it being that size . She told of the Chinese community , the wind , rain , and snow on the Sunday of December 22 as well as horse-drawn pumps , river steamers and dried up water cistern .
The Oregon Fire Service Museum is currently under construction . The vision is to share the museum ’ s collection of antique and vintage fire apparatuses , equipment , protective clothing and gear , historical photos and memorabilia with us . The construction of phase one of the new museum facility is underway at Powerland Heritage Park in Brooks adjacent to I-5 near Salem . When the museum building is complete , interactive exhibits will tell the story of evolving firefighting and prevention technology . Visitors of all ages will learn about major fires in Oregon ’ s towns and wildlands as well as home fire safety practices . Future construction will enlarge the vehicle showroom and add an onsite workshop where visitors may observe volunteers restoring and repairing historical vehicles . Additionally , the
museum is collecting personal stories and biographical information about Oregonians involved in fire service to aid genealogists , historians and others in their research . For additional information you can call 1-888-313-6873 .
The Pacific Northwest is one of the most exciting and dynamic wine regions . Our higher latitude means we get more sunlight than Napa Valley during the growing season , and the coolness of our nights delivers dramatic diurnal shifts that allow grapes to naturally retain acidity and achieve fresh varietal character . Locally , Lady Hill Winery crafts handmade wines from grapes grown only at the region ’ s finest vineyards and by the most experienced winegrowers . Join us April 11 for our luncheon catered by It ’ s Party Time and programmed by Elaine Owen of Lady Hill Winery . This is sure to be a very interesting presentation . The cost is $ 30 for members and $ 35 for nonmembers . With the opening of the activity center , sign-up and deposit of checks for the luncheons will still be in the CCC Event Center coatroom as it has been . Please remember checks are due at noon on the Thursday prior to the luncheon .
The grand finale will be May 9 . “ It ’ s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood ” is our annual spring fashion show and luncheon catered by Dalton ’ s . Co-chairs Kathy Fisher and Robin Gowdy are busy putting the final touches on this always sold-out event . Fashions will be presented by Julie Reece of Chico ’ s at Washington Square . Member cost is $ 35 with preferred reservations until April 20 . Table reservation forms are available or you can make individual reservations in the book . The table captain is to pay for the entire table or include all member checks with the reservation . Non-members may make reservations as of April 20 if the event is not sold out . Non-member cost is $ 40 . The final reservation deadline is noon on Tuesday May 3 or when sold out .
