coast and it ran good on the west coast . that ' s pretty impressive considering you know both of those events were so vastly different terrain ; i didn ' t even have to touch the air fuel screw mixture screw which is just mind-blowing going between different temperatures and different elevations and it just runs that good .
OTP : What about your tire situation ? We heard some riders , like Cody Webb , had to make pit stops to change tires out because the sandstone was just eating the rubber .
QUINN : We ' re running Mitas Tires this year . I didn ' t have a lot of time to do testing with the tires but I had some of the Single Green Terra Force 140s , which are the FIM tires , your typical european small lug , wide footprint gummy tire . I liked how it worked on the sandstone .
Like you said , the sandstone was tearing tires up but the Mitas Tires work they don ' t wear nearly as bad as your typical other gummy tires so I was really happy . They make a one-step gummier tire , the Double Green ; that might have given me a bit more traction , but it would have worn faster . I think I made the right decision with the tire I ran .
OTP : Did you have to make any fuel stops ?
QUINN : Oh yeah , I stopped every lap ; there ' s a lot of deep sand out there . We ' re just pinning it through the sand and barely moving , and that sucks down fuel like crazy . I stopped after every lap . I was probably using about a half tank every lap , maybe a little more , so it was definitely the right call to get a stop in each lap .
OTP : Other than the mechanical issues , what do you think was the biggest challenge out there ?
QUINN : The biggest challenge was just trusting that you had the traction you needed on some of the sketchier obstacles . That ' s probably why I ended up making a mistake and bending my handlebars on the first lap because I just didn ' t trust that I was going to hook up in some of the situations . I think some of the West Coast boys have that figured out ; I ' m from the East Coast where everything is like pure ice .
I ' m looking forward to rebounding and doing better at the next event , the RevLimiter in Texas . I ' ll probably stay with the same bike setup , but maybe make some suspension adjustments with the folks at Stillwell Suspension . Texas isn ' t quite as much sand as this event , but it ' s similar with big grippy rocks and stuff , so we ' ll probably be running mostly the same setup out there .
