'The Lord's Supper' is one of the sacraments ordained by Jesus Himself for us to follow. The other is
Baptism. The Lord's Supper or the Holy Communion is not a mere rite established by the religious leaders.
Jesus Himself set a model for us to follow (Mt 26:28, Mk 14:24, Lk 22:20). Baptism is a command that we
obey for once, soon after we are saved. But we need to partake in the Lord's Supper as long as we are alive.
Why should we observe it?
It was instituted by the Lord Jesus Himself Mt 26:26-29
It was followed by the Early Church Acts 2:42, 46; 20:7
It was instructed in the Epistle 1 Cor 11:17-34
We partake in obedience to the Lord's command 1 Cor 11:24
It is an act of remembering the Lord 1 Cor 11:24
We proclaim that we await His Second Coming 1 Cor 11:26
We need to do it till He comes again 1 Cor 11:26
T hings to remember:
We should not take part in an unworthy manner. We should take time and examine ourselves. We should
forgive others and get reconciled 1Cor 11: 28-30.
Thank Him for His sacrifice: Thank Him for bearing our sins, sicknesses and enabling us to draw near the
throne of grace 1 Cor 11:24-26; Is 53:4,5; 1 Pet 2:24; Eph 2:13; Heb 10:19,20.
He is going to come again as King. He makes His enemies His footstool 1 Cor 11:26
T hings to follow:
The bread and the wine does not become Christ's body and blood. They symbolize His body and blood Mt
26:29.
Only those who have a born again experience can truly partake in the Lord's Supper and it is a necessity for a
believer.
The day or the time doesn't matter. The early believers met together on the first day of the week and hence,
they broke bread on the first day. Since, the first Eucharist was celebrated during the night, it is termed as
“Supper”.
