What Is Blood Flow Restriction Training?

Blood flow restriction training, or BFR, is a way to “bio-hack” the body to create an artificial high intensity exercise environment. It involves using a specialized tourniquet to reduce arterial flow and restrict venous flow to an exercising limb. This technique helps enhance the nutrients used by the tissue to help you reach your goals faster!

Who is appropriate for BFR?

BFR is a great option for anyone looking to accelerate muscle growth or improve aerobic endurance. It is a GREAT option for a patient post-surgery, like after an ACL repair. It allows the tissue to be stressed in ways that it could not be with standard post-operative physical therapy, which accelerates strength gains and reduces atrophy.

BFR is a great option for training when injured. It uses lower loads and weights than traditional strength training, so it is less stressful on injured tissue. In addition, BFR produces significant amounts of lactate, which has been shown to be anti-inflammatory. This helps the healing process and decreases the time needed to recover from injury!

Is BFR safe?

Absolutely! When individualized and performed correctly, BFR is very safe. It uses a doppler ultrasound to find a specific pressure for your exercise that is safe and effective. Smart Cuffs, manufactured by SmartTools, are the cuffs we use and are one of two on the market regulated by the FDA.

Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT) Explained

Below is a video of one of our post-op ACL patients crushing her BFR training. She has been using BFR for some of her rehabilitation process and has made significant gains on her track to return to soccer! Regarding her experience with BFR, she said “…the results show! 10/10 would recommend to anyone trying to build muscle back”.
