Fly Guy Springtime Fly Fishing by Capt. Tristan Daire Old Towne Fly Shop (985) 630 3892 April marks the real transition into spring fishing. Temperatures are coming up quickly and if we can escape some of the April showers, we look to be in for a banner spring. Spring is the most consistent time of year for Louisiana fly fishermen, we are given a choice between equally good fresh and saltwater fishing. Freshwater fishing will continue to improve with rising temps for both bass and panfish. All of the local bayous seem to be producing steady and improving catches, and they should continue to get better as nagging floodwaters recede. Crappie fishing will begin to slow down as these fish finish their spawn and spread out into deep water. For bass and panfish, we can begin to fish exclusively topwater selections in a variety of sizes. Look for larger bream to make a big push onto the annual beds in the latter part of the month. Saltwater fly-fishing this month will entail a few of our favorite things: redfish in grassy, brackish environments, large spawning trout willing to take topwaters, and for those of you who can get offshore, a fantastic variety of species shaking off the winter rust. Redfish will be targeted statewide in interior brackish water environments with the perennial favorites of Delacroix, Venice, Myrtle Grove, and Houma topping the list. Look for open pond systems holding grass, good water, and bait. Find fish, cast, repeat! It's a great time of year to throw poppers at our fish, other flies include light baitfish imitations and spoon flies. Using lighter flies will help keep the grass off your fly. Spawning speckled trout will be caught during this month's full moon. We prefer large topwater patterns on open water oyster reefs and beaches. April is a great month to get back out there and back to fishing. It’s also one of the more productive months for fly-fishing here in Louisiana. Olde Towne Fly Shop is here to help however we can. Please be mindful of our resources and how we treat them! 15 April 2016 www.marshandbayou.com
