AS COOL AS ICE: GLACIAL TABLES
By Wessel Stoltz
Back in 2012 the architectural maven, Zaha Hadid,
tried her hand at designing furniture and, as with
everything else she designs, the result was as cool
as, well, glacial ice…
Originally commissioned by the David Gill Gallery
in Mayfair, Hadid used acrylic resin to make
dining and coffee tables that are formally
remarkable: whilst the surfaces of these tables are
entirely flat and see-through, the underside and legs
resemble the fluidity of rippling water. She

aptly named the collection the Liquid Glacial series.
The Liquid Glacial series has pushed the
boundaries of materiality and innovation (and the
limits to which your bank balance can stretch – in
2013 the starting price was in excess of £100k…)
and was shortlisted for the Design Museum’s 2013
Design of the Year Awards.
Now, two years on, Hadid decided to expand the
collection and added some stools and a bowl designed to resemble ice formations.
The curved shapes of the stools mimic the forms of
melting glacial ice: the flat seating surface
gently slopes into vertical legs that look like
pouring water. This effect was achieved by milling
patterns into the surfaces to refract light.
You can catch Liquid Glacial until 4 July 2015 at
David Gill Gallery, 2-4 King Street, London.
