Key Insights Table 8: Cohen’ s d Effector on Confidence and Knowledge about Apprenticeships
Very large effects were seen in‘ How to apply’,‘ Searching for apprenticeship vacancies’ and‘ Understanding minimum wage’. These areas show major improvements in knowledge or confidence.
Large effects were seen in the knowledge of what it would be like to study and work as an apprentice which suggests strong impact on experience and understanding.
Medium effects were seen in understanding the Well-being support available’,‘ how apprenticeships are different from school / college’ and that the student‘ knew enough about apprenticeships to know whether would like to apply or not’. These reflect noticeable but varied improvements.
Small effects were seen in‘ I am thinking of applying for an apprenticeship,‘ Apprenticeships are for people like me’ and‘ If I applied for an apprenticeship I would get a place”. It is understandable to have a smaller effect for applying to an apprenticeship, but these may reflect more subtle shifts in perception or confidence. A recommendation would be facilitating opportunities for students to meet current apprenticeships and employers to improve confidence in their ability to gain a place and fit in.
