and coaches need to work harder to strike up a dialogue and demonstrate an engagement and collaboration in developing coaching practice . Coaching and its future development still need to be informed by connected programmes of research embedded in practice that must be theoretically and empirically sophisticated . However , coaches clinging to belief-based or ‘ folk pedagogies ’ and researchers retreating into individual disciplines has so far delivered a polarisation of the field , and marginalised coaching research and its conceptual development away from practice . A more sophisticated understanding of coaching is certainly part of the solution and analysis of coaching practice in real settings ( in collaboration with coaches ) provides the tools to better comprehend coaches ’ and athletes ’ individual and collective work .
