APPLIED COACHING RESEARCH JOURNAL 2021 , Vol . 7 can be used to assess the value of social learning . We used it to explore the value created through participation in the online CoP across the five cycles ( Table 1 ). Individuals do not necessarily move linearly through the cycles or cover all five cycles .
The Value Creation Framework was used to assess the impact the CoP had on the coaches involved including the learning opportunities CoPs could provide and the value of the learning ( short-term Table 1 : Cycles within the value creation framework
Cycle Description and long-term ). At seven months , we conducted a review session with the coaches and at nine months with the Coach Developer to ascertain their thoughts towards the CoP ; whether it met their expectations , their views of the online experience , how to move the CoP forward and the impact on their coaching / personal development .
Key findings The ongoing monitoring and reviews conducted with the Coach Developer and coaches enabled the collection of value creation stories to determine the value of being involved in a CoP . Each cycle was represented , and the findings are presented accordingly per cycle .
Immediate value
Potential value
Applied value
Interactions and activities have value in themselves
Interactions and activities produce knowledge capital and have the potential to be realised later
Interactions and activities lead to changes in existing strategies and / or implementation of new strategies in practice
Immediate value
Online CoPs provided members with an opportunity to learn more informally
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions placed on social interaction , there were limited opportunities for coaches to learn socially . One of the things that the coaches really liked about the online CoPs was their informal nature .
Realised value
Reframing value
Improvement in performance or achievement of goals as a result of applying value
Reconsideration of learning objectives and / or definition of success including reframing strategies , goals and values
Coaches “ The best part of lockdown !”
“ It was more informal than I expected . There was constructive guidance from a variety of people so I could pick and choose what to take away .”
“ I like the principle of it . I liken it to a coffee chat , but you don ’ t have to travel !”
“ It was good to hear real life situations with different people leading . I like being able to contribute rather than just listen to a presentation .”
Coach Developer
“ I love the coolness of it ! It ’ s a privilege to be involved and will give value for everyone in the future . Once people understand what a CoP is , it is really impactful , they can navigate and utilise it how they like .”
