APPLIED COACHING RESEARCH JOURNAL 2020, Vol. 5 What do the findings mean for coaching? Johnston, D., and Morrison, B. W. (2016) The application of naturalistic decision-making techniques to explore cue use in rugby league playmakers. Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making, 10 (4): 391-410. doi:10.1177/1555343416662181 • It is important that coaches achieve a good balance between the use of off-field practice tasks (review, video, classroom) and on-field practice, to guide players to prevalent match information and appropriate decisions. Macquet, A. C., and Kragba, K. (2015) What makes basketball players continue with the planned play or change it? A case study of relationships between sense-making and decision-making. Cognition, Technology & Work, 17 (3): 345-353. • The decision and/or decisions the coach aims to develop in the players should be used to shape the design of the practice. Passos, P., Araújo, D., Davids, K., and Shuttleworth, R. (2008) Manipulating constraints to train decision making in rugby union. International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching, 3 (1): 125-140. Implications for coaching While only one case is presented in this paper, recommendations for coaches have been drawn out from the research literature 2 . • When using on-field environments, it is important that coaches plan and deliver activities that represent the demands of the game within the specific moment/situation. For example, if the moment of the game involves a decision within a single phase of play, plan for an activity that is also a single phase. What can coaches learn from the findings? • Coaches might want to consider recording their practice (video and audio) and critically reflectling on their beliefs and ideals (thinking), and their practice (doing). Focusing on the disparities between beliefs and realities may provide opportunities to learn and develop, whilst alignment may provide examples of best practice.
