To overcome the growing challenges of apparel export sector, many exporters across India are looking to improve their overall working system by investing in quality, automation and efficiency. Jaipur-based apparel exporter Fashion Images Overseas is also one of them. With an investment of Rs. 50 lakh, the company recently adopted auto thread trimmers, for two-level checking of grey as well as printed and dyed fabric. Proper infrastructure has been set up for the same. The company, manufacturing nearly 70,000 pieces of ladies’ garments, has prestigious high-end clients in countries like Japan, Australia, and the US.
Aseem Singla, Director of the company shared,“ We have got good results from the investment as the work on shopfloor, which was being

done earlier in 8 hours, now takes less than half the time.” In recent years, Aseem made few visits to his Japan-based clients and observed his shipments closely, deciding on what changes can be done at the Jaipur factory. These experiences

also motivated him to change his company’ s hiring process.
Earlier the company had a majority of uneducated workers in the checking department and most of the work was being done manually.
|
Recently, the company has started hiring educated freshers and is also paying them a little more wage.“ We trained these freshers according to our systems and assigned them responsibility of a particular job. The results were positive, and in last few months, overall quality has also improved a lot. Our alteration rate too has come down remarkably,” added Aseem.
Moving forward, Aseem wants to make sure that these improvements can be a constant part of the factory.“ Our effort is to make such a shopfloor where at one end, the fabric cutting takes place and at the other end, a complete stitched garment is brought out, and which is ready for packaging. So, we have a minimum stock, but with maximum output,” he concluded.

Growing organised domestic apparel retail market is motivating apparel exporters and their associations to enter into this segment. To grab the opportunity in this sector, India Knit Fair Association( IKFA) and Knit Express( Nugarvour Express), Tirupur have come up with their Domestic Garment Trade Fair which is scheduled to take place from 5-7 October in Tirupur. It is worth mentioning here that IKFA is already organising India International Knit Fair( IIKF) from decades to promote apparel export at the global level. This is the first effort of the association with a focus on domestic market.
Dr. A. Sakthivel, Chairman, IKFA informed,“ Almost 33 per cent of Tirupur’ s knitwear production

and about 20 per cent of its woven-garment production, both by volume, enter export market. Overall, about 25 to 30 per cent of the volume of its garment production goes into export markets, leaving 75 per cent for domestic consumption. As challenges are increasing at the global level for apparel exporters, India has had to adopt innovative practices as a labour-oriented industry; the activity in production and marketing has now shifted to domestic markets( retail trade). India has occupied a remarkable position in global retail rankings, the country has high market potential, low economic risk, and moderate other risks.”
The various local associations like SIMA, KNITMA, TEAMA,
