Myanmar seeks investment in textiles in Chin state
Government of Myanmar has
sought investment in textiles in
its state of Chin that borders India
and Bangladesh. Meanwhile,
several foreign companies
have started closely working
with Chin weavers so as to
produce fabrics to be exported.
Turquoise Mountain, a UK-based
organisation, in its endeavour to
work with the weavers of Chin
state, recently held a workshop
in the state capital of Hakha.
The workshop focused majorly
on colour and raw materials,
which the company feels are
significant to open up higher
value markets. The organisation
UK-based non-
government
organisation Turquoise
Mountain has already
started working with
weavers in Chin State.
It has also established
a central ‘cut and sew’
workshop in Yangon
that focuses on product
development and
quality control.
also recently set up a central
‘cut and sew’ workshop in
Yangon. In addition to keeping
the important part of the
value chain within Myanmar,
the workshop focuses more
on product development and
quality control. It is important
to note that UK’s Department
for International Development
through its DaNa facility has
been partly financing the
organisation’s work with the
textile sector of Chin state. The
Government, however, has called
for more foreign investment
into the state of Chin. In 2017,
another UK company Kalinko
too worked closely with the Chin
weavers to produce high-quality
products.
Chinese investors eye Myanmar's
garment sector; here's why
Lot of Chinese investors have
expressed their interest to
invest big in apparel production
in Myanmar. The Ayeyarwady
Development Public Co. Ltd.
(ADPC) is all set to build an
industrial park in the port city
of Pathein to promote garment
industry in the city. The company
has also entered into a contract
with Hong Kong-based China
Textile Network Co. Ltd.,
according to which the latter
intends to set up 50 garment
factories in Pathein in next
two years. The recently signed
agreement between ADPC and the
Chinese firm said that 50 factories
will be built on an area spanning
200 acres in the industrial city of
Pathein. Chinese interest towards
the city arises from the fact that

land prices in Pathein are half
of those in Yangon. Besides, the
industrial city also has the ability
to ship directly to Singapore. “The
agreement could see Chinese
companies invest around US
$ 100 million in the industrial
park to set up garment factories,”
