in a session on ‘Product
Sustainability Information’.
Keeping in view the young and
millennial Indian consumers/
users who are becoming
more and more conscious of
the products they buy and
use, Naresh Tyagi, Chief
Sustainability Officer, ABFRL
shared that ABFRL is one of
the three companies in India
which has volunteered to apply
a set of ‘Guidelines’ on product
sustainability – and he shared
the case of ‘Earth Chinos’. The
One Planet Network (erstwhile
10YFP programme on Sustainable
Consumption and Production of UN
Environment) has developed this
‘Guideline’ that can help companies
make effective and reliable claims
about sustainability performance of
specific products.
During the event, CRB launched
a project entitled, ‘Promoting
Responsible Business Practices in
Value Chains in India’ (referred to
as PROGRESS project), wherein
apparel and textiles sector would
be looked into, especially given
the sector’s potential impacts
on SDGs. Launching the project,
Saskia Loer Hansen, Pro-Vice-
Chancellor International, Aston
University (UK) – the partner of
CRB in this project, highlighted the
importance of the project not only
in strengthening the partnership
between the two institutions, but
also its contribution particularly
towards the welfare of women and
youth in India.
Circular economy is the
buzzword today. The national
and international experts
discussed the relevance of
circular economy for Indian
business and society in a session
at the event. CRB in fact has
undertaken a research to assess
the level of preparedness of
Indian stakeholders to promote
the principles of circular
economy in the Indian apparel
and textiles value chain. There
is increasing discomfort about
restricting actions on circular
economy in the post-consumer
usage segment by international
brands or companies in the
apparel sector. Together with
like-minded organisations,
CRB is exploring the possibility
of applying circular economy
principles in the Indian apparel
and textiles’ supply chain.
