SUSTAINABILITY UN initiates alliance to promote fashion sustainability The UN has launched an alliance to endorse sustainability in fashion in an effort to help textile and fashion sector attain the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The alliance was launched on 14 March in Nairobi, Kenya, during the ongoing 4th Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA). Among the major objectives of forming the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion is to understand where the gaps exist, do an analysis and then recommend the UN member states to take necessary action in their respective countries. Further on the above, Michael Stanley-Jones, Program Management Officer, Poverty- Environment Facility, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), said this alliance will help the institutions share solutions and technologies to popularise the agreed development goals. He also added that the alliance endeavours to start a collaborative dialogue with important players from various streams of the industry so as to create tangible, beneficial and lasting solutions that will ensure the fashion is able to adapt and thrive. “The fashion sector is the second biggest consumer of water. It not only produces 20 per cent of wastewater but also annually releases half a million tonnes of microfibres into ocean,” stated Stanley-Jones. www.apparelresources.com | APRIL 1-15, 2019 | Apparel Online India 17
